Portfolio > Gardens

This composition embodies the design of traditional Japanese raked sand dry gardens (karesansui). Some maintain that well-designed karesansui can evoke the sound of rushing water for visitors.* This miniature garden incorporates a hidden fountain to reinforce this effect and to deepen the sense of stillness and focused awareness on the present moment, a Japanese concept known as seijaku.

The shallow tray framing this composition was made from sustainable western red cedar. The finish was achieved by charring and brushing (a Japanese technique known as yakisugi).
