This composition gives form to the Buddhist concept of Atta Dipa, the internal place where an enlightened person can take refuge when life becomes difficult. Nearing the end of his own life, the Buddha is said to have advised his disciples to return to the island inside themselves whenever they feel afraid, unstable, or in despair.
The shallow tray framing this composition was made from sustainable western red cedar. The finish was achieved by charring and brushing (a Japanese technique known as yakisugi).
