Totems
Totems have played an important role in the religious history of North America, as well as Asia, Australia, and Europe. A totem represents a natural or mythical animal to which a person feels a spiritual connection. This composition is intended to call to mind the diverse references to the hawk as guide, guardian, and messenger.
The Korean tray, a casting of 85% mica and graphite, is hand burnished and sealed. Below the lip of the tray are the Chinese characters “shan" and "chuan" (mountains and streams).
