About 30% of earth’s fresh water lies underground in subterranean lakes. Over thousands of years, this water has dissolved the limestone in these lakes into shapes such as the rock in this composition, quarried in Texas. Similar formations found near Taihu Lake in China are among the most prized of “scholar’s rocks”. *

Acknowledging the love of stone collecting shared in both China and Japan, the stone is displayed on a base carved with contours reflecting the raked stone of Japanese Zen gardens.
