Inferno Crater Lake

2018

Inferno Crater Lake is one of several large hot springs located in the Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley on the North Island of New Zealand. The crater was blasted out of the side of the locally prominent Mt Haszard during the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886.

Beginning at Inferno Crater Lake, the Mt Haszard Hiking Trail begins at Inferno Crater high above the Waimangu Volcanic Valley floor, providing spectacular panoramic views of the valley.

A geyser at the bottom of the lake causes the water temperature to vary in a 38-day cycle from 35 to 80 °C (95 to 176 °F) and depths up to 30 metres (98 ft). As the depth changes, the lake's color varies from dull grey to an intense blue-green, a result of fine silica suspended in the water. The effect is simulated in this composition with the use of translucent Corian and an ultrasonic fogger.
