pyroclastic rock (feather rock) fountain with oakleaf fig and handmade birds
Flight of Terns
15" x 10" x 8"

Following the varying density, grain patterns, and rose-colored fragments within a large featherock boulder yielded the shapes of the islands in this composition. The boulder was the product of a violent volcanic eruption in the eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains some 40,000 years ago. The curved Corian base suggests a steep beach of black volcanic sand.

The modified Korean mica tray was hand-burnished.
