Chinese landscape painting developed and flourished in the Tang and Song dynasties (618 -1279 AD). Many famous works were completed in black ink only, but vibrant landscapes in green and blue also became popular. This shadowbox composition reflects the development of color in Chinese landscape painting and the compositional techniques of Tang dynasty painters.

The background, live plants, rough stone, and miniature figures in the foreground overlay smoother shaved layers of feather rock, receding to moonlit slopes in the far distance. A recessed fluorescent grow lamp accentuates the surface textures and facilitates plant growth, allowing this composition to be located on any wall, irrespective of available sunlight.
