Among the best known varieties of Chinese gongshi, or “scholar’s rocks”, are Ying limestone rocks, found in southwest China. Ying rocks are prized for their intricately furrowed surfaces.*
Sometimes referred to as “spirit stones”, the organic, sculptural quality of scholar’s rocks inspired this composition in feather rock set on a small Corian pedestal, with a backdrop of umbrella palm growing from a submerged planter. Waterfalls cascading through the rock’s many furrows and tunnels into the pool below create distinctive natural music.
