The term Tsukubai comes from the Japanese verb Tsukubau, which means to bow or to crouch down, referring to how the arrangement is used, as well as emphasizing the importance of humbleness.

This tsukubai composition includes a basin (chozubachi) for cleansing the hands and wetting the mouth and a bamboo ladle (hishaku), accompanied by a low-spreading plant.
